Your partners might expect that ‘as long as we are collaborating, we must get along’.
Your partners each have unique and specific needs they want met. If partners help you meet your needs, you’ll perceive that you are ‘getting along’ with them. If they challenge you, or do things that interfere with you meeting your needs, you’ll perceive emotional frustration and question if these are the right people in the partnership.
Expecting partners to always get along is unrealistic and will create added frustration and tension.
Collaboration is a process that helps partners work together towards a common vision, objectives and goals. Creating a safe space for partners to talk about what isn’t working, the challenges, and what needs to improve is important to the overall functioning of the partnership.
